Expert-ID: How France's Order of Chartered Accountants Secures Professional Identity

When an entire regulated profession decides to adopt Visible Digital Seal (VDS) technology to protect its members' identities, it sends a powerful signal about the maturity and reliability of the technology. This is not a simple QR code linking to a webpage. It is a cryptographically signed seal that embeds verified identity data directly in the barcode. Any modification to the data — a changed name, a falsified status — immediately invalidates the signature.

Verification with Otentik Codes Reader

Here is where the VDS ecosystem comes together. The secure QR code on an Expert-ID card can be verified in two ways:

  1. The built-in scanner within the Expert-ID app itself.
  2. Otentik Codes Reader — the public VDS verification app available on all major app stores and developed within the VDSIC trust framework.

When a client, bank, or government agency scans the QR code, they instantly see:

  • The accountant's name, first name, and photograph
  • Confirmation of their professional status — whether they are an active, registered chartered accountant
  • Whether the seal is valid and untampered

If the status cannot be validated, the app prompts the user to report a potential case of illegal practice — a critical safeguard for the profession.

MFActe! — Multi-Factor Authentication

Expert-ID also includes MFActe!, a multi-factor authentication solution that adds a second validation layer for sensitive operations:

  • Approving changes to sensitive information
  • Validating connections to third-party tools
  • Confirming actions initiated by employees or collaborators

This ensures that even if credentials are compromised, critical operations require explicit approval through the Expert-ID app on the accountant's personal device.

Why VDS Instead of a Simple Database Lookup?

Offline Capability

Not every verification happens in a connected office. VDS verification requires no live server query — trust information is downloaded and cached on the device in advance, enabling fully offline verification thereafter.

Data Integrity

A database lookup confirms current status but says nothing about whether the card itself has been forged. A VDS seal cryptographically binds the identity data to the card — physical or digital. If someone prints a fake card with altered details, the signature check fails instantly.

Privacy

With VDS, the verification app reads only the data encoded in the seal. No query is sent to a central server, no log of who was verified and when is created. The accountant's privacy is preserved.

International Recognition

Because Expert-ID uses VDS technology aligned with VDSIC/AIGCEV standards, the secure QR code is verifiable by any application in the global VDS trust network — not just Expert-ID. An Otentik Codes Reader user in another country can verify a French accountant's credentials without installing a profession-specific app.

A Model for Regulated Professions

The Expert-ID deployment by France's Order of Chartered Accountants is a compelling blueprint for other regulated professions:
